My work focuses on time and placement within environments, showcasing how these places bring emotion and connection. Each of my pieces expresses moments from my life. They are a collection of feelings, thoughts, and choices I have made and reflect upon. I add a sense of magical realism by blurring that line between realities and the contentment of nostalgia to create an otherworldly feel. My pieces are reflections of myself, yet they are crafted to signify the progress of time, thus the need for an uncanny perception.
The scenes I represent often highlight feelings of regret, melancholy, or comfort through unreal representations. Color, texture, and craftsmanship are a big part of my creative process. Often memories shift and change over time causing our perception of them to differ from others. Objects appearing bigger than they are, details from scenes fading away, or aspects that weren’t in the original memory appearing are amplified within my work through sensory input. I blend colors, letting the tones shift, and contort objects to meld together, causing the scene to look like it’s one entity.
My works are generally small, ranging from a weight one could hold in the palm of one hand to a medium-sized room. It is important to me that my pieces are not big and imposing, but rather take on a more subdued nature. The smaller scale of my pieces is more intimate and allows for a greater understanding of the environments I wish to create. The color, texture, and craftsmanship of each piece draw the viewer in and the smaller scale allows for more details to show the closer the viewer is to the work. These elements put together create a cherished nature and a desire for relation, not only for myself but for the viewer as well.
